About Langstone Harbour SPA and Ramsar Site

Langstone Harbour is a vital coastal wetland site in Hampshire, England, known for its extensive mudflats, saltmarshes, and rich birdlife, making it a premier destination for birdwatching and coastal nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Langstone Harbour is an intertidal coastal wetland located between Portsmouth and Hayling Island in Hampshire, England. It covers a large area of tidal mudflats, saltmarshes, and shallow waters, providing important habitats for a wide diversity of waterfowl, wading birds, and fish species. Recognized both as a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the European Union's Birds Directive and a Ramsar Site on the international list of wetlands of significance, Langstone Harbour supports key populations of nationally and internationally important bird species, especially in winter when huge flocks of ducks, geese, and waders gather on the exposed mudflats to feed. Species such as Brent geese, dark-bellied brent geese, oystercatchers, and redshanks are regularly seen here. The harbour’s rich ecology also supports important invertebrate communities within the mud, which sustain the complex food web. Historically, Langstone Harbour has served as a natural barrier and a place for fishing and shellfish harvesting, though much of today’s focus is on conservation and low-impact recreation. Popular activities include birdwatching, walking along coastal paths with views over the tides, and exploring nearby villages and marinas. While no formal campgrounds are located within the SPA, the surrounding region offers multiple options for visitors seeking to extend their stay. The area’s accessibility by road and proximity to the South Downs National Park make it a well-visited site for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone interested in England’s coastal biodiversity.
