Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Lake Sevan National Park is located in the Gegharkunik Province of Armenia and centers on Lake Sevan, one of the largest freshwater high-altitude lakes in the Eurasian region, situated approximately 1,900 meters (6,234 feet) above sea level. The park covers both aquatic and adjacent terrestrial zones, offering a remarkable habitat for rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. The lake itself spans roughly 1,242 square kilometers and is surrounded by mountain ranges that provide dramatic scenery and varied recreational access. Established in 1978, the park is vital for conservation and supports several important bird species, including migratory populations that use the area as a stopover or breeding ground. Visitors to the park enjoy activities such as hiking, birdwatching, fishing, boating, and exploring historical landmarks, including the medieval Sevanavank Monastery perched on a peninsula overlooking the lake. The national park also supports local communities through eco-tourism and cultural heritage preservation. Its combination of freshwater ecosystems, alpine meadows, and historic sites makes it a unique destination in the South Caucasus region. The lake’s striking blue waters paired with diverse landscapes attract photographers, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts seeking both adventure and relaxation. Access to the park is primarily via the nearby towns of Sevan and Gavar, which offer amenities and entry points. Protection efforts continue to focus on maintaining water quality, safeguarding endangered species, and balancing tourism with sustainable development of the area’s natural and cultural resources.
