About Lake Huron Coastal Wetlands

The Lake Huron Coastal Wetlands span the southern and eastern shores of Lake Huron, offering critical habitat for diverse wildlife and opportunities for birdwatching, paddling, and nature exploration along Michigan’s and Ontario’s coastlines.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Lake Huron Coastal Wetlands stretch along the shoreline of Lake Huron, primarily in Michigan’s Thumb region and parts of southeastern Ontario. These wetlands consist of marshes, swamps, and shallow bays that provide essential ecological functions including water filtration, flood control, and nursery grounds for fish and aquatic species. The geography includes a varied coastal landscape with sandy beaches, dune systems, river mouths, and embayments. The region supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including migratory waterfowl, breeding shorebirds, amphibians, and species such as the endangered Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake and the rare Piping Plover. Historically, these wetlands were vital to Indigenous peoples for fishing and gathering, and later supported commercial fishing and limited farming. Today, much of the area is protected through state parks, wildlife refuges, and conservation easements. Key recreation activities include birdwatching during spring and fall migrations, paddling through calm backwaters, fishing for bass and panfish, and hiking trails that border wetland edges and dunes. Notable sites within the greater area include the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary offshore, and Michigan’s Kinde Wetlands. The coastal scenery, rich biodiversity, and tranquility attract naturalists, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts, making the Lake Huron Coastal Wetlands a vital outdoor and conservation resource on the Great Lakes.
