About Laguna Superior Ecological Reserve

Laguna Superior Ecological Reserve is a protected wetland complex on the northern California coast, renowned for its rich biodiversity and critical habitat for migratory birds and rare aquatic species.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Laguna Superior Ecological Reserve is located in Humboldt County, California, anchored by the 800-acre Laguna Superior, a coastal lagoon that provides a vital habitat for a wide range of wildlife. The reserve encompasses tidal marshes, mudflats, dunes, and coastal scrub ecosystems, making it a hotspot for birdwatching, particularly during migratory seasons. Surrounded by Sitka spruce forests and freshwater streams at the lagoon’s inflow, the area supports several sensitive and endangered species such as the tidewater goby and Western pond turtle. Historically, Laguna Superior and its surrounding lands have been part of the traditional territory of the Wiyot people, who relied on the lagoon’s rich resources. Today, it offers a peaceful setting for hiking and interpretive nature walks. Visitors often enjoy spotting shorebirds, raptors, and occasionally river otters while exploring the network of trails and viewing platforms. Although the reserve is primarily focused on conservation and research, it provides public access via well-maintained footpaths that promote low-impact recreation. Proximity to Humboldt Bay and nearby towns makes Laguna Superior an accessible yet tranquil escape. The ecological reserve plays a vital role in coastal wetland preservation, buffering inland areas from storm surges, filtering water, and supporting carbon sequestration. For visitor safety and habitat protection, certain sections are seasonally closed to protect nesting birds. Laguna Superior Ecological Reserve is a model for community-supported conservation and environmental education on California’s north coast.
