Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Laguna de la Nava Natural Reserve is located in the state of Zacatecas in northeastern Mexico. It protects one of the region’s most significant wetland ecosystems, comprising a shallow lake surrounded by marshes and grasslands. The reserve plays a critical role in regional biodiversity by supporting an array of bird species, fish, amphibians, and other wildlife. The lake is a key stopover and breeding habitat for migratory waterfowl including ducks, herons, and coots, attracting bird watchers and naturalists from across the country. The surrounding vegetation consists mainly of reeds, aquatic plants, and native grasses, providing shelter and food sources for the wildlife. Historically, the wetland has been important for local communities, offering natural resources and ecosystem services such as water purification and flood control. Outdoor activities here focus primarily on birdwatching and wildlife photography, along with quiet hiking around the perimeter of the lake and small boat excursions. The reserve is a tranquil destination, prized for its natural beauty and biodiversity rather than extensive developed facilities. Visitors appreciate the opportunity to observe rare or regionally important species in their natural habitat. The reserve contributes to Mexican national efforts to preserve vulnerable wetland environments amid increasing agricultural and urban pressures in the broader landscape. Its accessibility from nearby towns allows ecotourists to combine cultural visits with immersive nature experiences.
