About Lac Saint-Jean National Park

Lac Saint-Jean National Park offers diverse outdoor adventures across a scenic landscape of boreal forests, lakes, and marshlands, ideal for hiking, cycling, and wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lac Saint-Jean National Park, located in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, is a protected natural area spanning approximately 165 square kilometers. The park features dense boreal forests, clear lakes, extensive wetlands, and rocky outcrops shaped by glacial activity. It is bordered by the vast Lac Saint-Jean, an important freshwater resource and cultural landmark of the region. Established in 1985, the park preserves a mix of forested ecosystems that serve as habitat for species such as moose, black bear, beaver, and a variety of birdlife including osprey and common loons. The area also supports unique plant communities typical of the boreal environment. Visitors are drawn to the park for a range of outdoor activities, including multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking, canoeing on calm lakes and rivers, fishing, and in winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Key features include panoramic viewpoints like Monts-Valin foothills, coastal shores along Lac Saint-Jean, and interpretive trails that provide insights into the area's natural heritage. The park has well-maintained campgrounds and facilities designed to immerse visitors in nature while promoting sustainable use. Its proximity to the towns of Alma and Roberval makes it accessible but still quiet enough for a wilderness experience. The protected area continues to serve as a critical conservation site for native flora and fauna, alongside recreational and educational opportunities.
