About La Escobilla Turtle Sanctuary

La Escobilla Turtle Sanctuary on Mexico’s Pacific coast is one of the world’s largest nesting sites for olive ridley sea turtles, offering critical protection and seasonal wildlife viewing opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

La Escobilla Turtle Sanctuary is located along the Oaxaca coastline in southwestern Mexico and is famous for hosting one of the largest arribada events, where thousands of olive ridley sea turtles come ashore simultaneously to nest. The sanctuary encompasses a wide, sandy beach backed by coastal dunes and tropical vegetation, providing the ideal habitat for sea turtles during their nesting season. Each year, from July to November, tens of thousands of turtles crawl onto the beach at night, dig nests, and lay thousands of eggs beneath the sand. This phenomenon attracts biologists, conservationists, and eco-tourists alike, all drawn to witness and support the protection of these endangered reptiles. The sanctuary was established in partnership with local communities to safeguard turtle populations threatened by poaching, habitat loss, and predation. Beyond sea turtle conservation, the area supports coastal bird species and marine life important to the local ecosystem. Visitors can experience guided nighttime turtle walks during the nesting season to observe turtles in a controlled and respectful manner. While recreational infrastructure is minimal to preserve the sanctuary’s natural conditions, nearby villages offer lodging and cultural experiences linked to traditional fishing communities. The sanctuary is a vital conservation site that highlights the importance of community involvement in wildlife preservation and provides an intimate connection with one of nature’s most remarkable reproductive events.
