About Krkonoše National Park (Krkonošský národní park)

Krkonoše National Park protects the highest mountain range in the Czech Republic, offering diverse alpine landscapes, rare flora and fauna, and extensive hiking and winter sport opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP), established in 1963, spans the Krkonoše Mountains, the highest range in the Czech Republic, located along the northern border with Poland. The park covers nearly 37,000 acres of alpine meadows, dense spruce forests, glacial cirques, and mountain streams. It is home to rare and endemic species, including the mountain lizard and the critically endangered alpine plants that thrive in the harsh subarctic environment. The park’s geology is marked by granite peaks, unique rock formations, and peat bogs. The climate is characterized by cold winters with heavy snowfall, attracting winter sports enthusiasts, especially for skiing and snowboarding. Hiking is a year-round activity, with over 400 kilometers (approximately 250 miles) of marked trails that range from easy valley walks to challenging ascents to Sněžka, the highest peak in the Czech Republic at 1,603 meters (5,259 feet). The park features a variety of visitor centers that provide education on local wildlife and conservation efforts. Krkonoše’s cultural heritage includes traditional mountain villages and historic mountain huts. Wildlife watchers come to spot species such as lynx, red deer, and capercaillie. Additionally, the park’s network of maintained trails and ski resorts makes it a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts seeking natural beauty and seasonal activities. Overall, Krkonoše National Park offers a rich blend of ecological diversity, scenic beauty, and cultural history, with strong conservation emphasis to protect its fragile mountain environment.
