About Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve

Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve is a vast protected wetland complex in central Kazakhstan, renowned for its rich biodiversity and role as a critical habitat for migratory birds and endangered species.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1968, Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve is a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve and part of the Alakol-Korgalzhyn Lakes Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance. Located in the Kazakh Steppe on the northern edge of the Caspian Lowland, it spans a mosaic of shallow lakes, marshes, reed beds, salt flats, and steppe landscapes. This unique geography creates a vital stopover and breeding ground for over 300 bird species, including the rare Dalmatian pelican, pink flamingos, and the vulnerable Siberian crane. The reserve is also home to mammals like the saiga antelope, wild boar, and various small carnivores, providing a glimpse into Kazakhstan’s steppe ecosystem. Visitors are drawn to the stunning birdwatching opportunities, with peak seasons in spring and autumn during migration when flocks of thousands of birds fill the skies and wetlands. The reserve’s remote, relatively untouched setting offers peaceful trails and wildlife observation hides, ideal for eco-tourists and naturalists seeking immersion in pristine nature. Aside from birdwatching, the reserve facilitates controlled trekking, canoeing on its lakes, and cultural visits to local Kazakh villages, enhancing the visitor experience. Its landscape also features geological formations and the remarkable Korgalzhyn volcanic hills. Protection and conservation efforts focus on safeguarding endangered species and sustaining the integrity of the wetland habitat amid environmental threats. Overall, the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve is a globally significant natural area balancing conservation, research, and low-impact tourism in Kazakhstan’s steppe heartland.
