About Kitlope Heritage Conservancy Protected Area

Kitlope Heritage Conservancy Protected Area is one of North America’s largest intact coastal temperate rainforests, known for its unparalleled wilderness and cultural significance tied to the Haisla Nation. It offers remote, pristine landscapes ideal for wildlife viewing, river paddling, and cultural exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Kitlope Heritage Conservancy Protected Area spans over 316,000 acres of undisturbed coastal temperate rainforest on British Columbia’s central coast, making it one of the world's most significant examples of intact wilderness ecosystems. The area is shaped by the Kitlope River and its tributaries, carving deep valleys and fjord-like inlets. It supports diverse habitats ranging from old-growth forests to alpine meadows, home to species such as grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, mountain goats, and salmon. The region is protected not only for its ecological value but also for its profound cultural and historical importance to the Haisla Nation, who consider Kitlope their spiritual territory and birthplace. Visitors are drawn by the opportunity to experience complete wilderness with no developed trails or facilities, making it an exceptional destination for those seeking solitude and adventure. Kayaking or canoeing on the Kitlope River and Gardner Canal is popular, alongside wildlife observation and cultural tours guided by Haisla representatives. The conservancy is also internationally recognized for its role in conservancy efforts, offering critical habitat connectivity between coastal fjords and inland ecosystems. Due to its remote location, access involves boat or floatplane transportation, and visitors should prepare for challenging wilderness conditions. Kitlope’s combination of pristine ecological landscapes, rich Indigenous heritage, and strict protection provides a rare opportunity to explore one of the planet's last vast temperate rainforests.
