About Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a protected wildlife area located in Kisumu, Kenya, offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe diverse fauna including impalas, zebras, and various bird species within a natural setting close to the city.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a 1.5 square kilometer protected wildlife area established in 1992 on the outskirts of Kisumu, Kenya. It serves as an important green space and refuge for wildlife amidst urban development along the shores of Lake Victoria. The sanctuary protects a variety of animals, most famously the impala antelope, alongside other mammals such as zebras, warthogs, monkeys, and hyenas. Birdwatchers can find over 115 bird species making this sanctuary a premier spot for birding. The sanctuary’s vegetation consists mainly of savannah grasslands interspersed with riverine forest along the Nyamasaria River. Historically, the area was set aside to conserve wildlife threatened by expanding urbanization around Kisumu town. Visitors have access to several walking trails and picnic sites, offering easy wildlife viewing experiences. Key landmarks include a small museum and visitor center highlighting the sanctuary’s conservation efforts and local ecology. The sanctuary’s proximity to Kisumu city makes it ideal for day visitors seeking nature, birdwatching, and educational activities. It also offers opportunities for guided walks and environmental education for local communities and tourists alike, contributing to awareness of wildlife conservation in western Kenya.
