About Kaziranga Biosphere Reserve

Kaziranga Biosphere Reserve is a globally renowned protected area in Assam, India, famous for its exceptional population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and incredible biodiversity that offers rich wildlife viewing experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kaziranga Biosphere Reserve encompasses the Kaziranga National Park and adjoining areas, covering a vast floodplain along the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India. Renowned for hosting the world's largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, it supports a wide range of fauna including elephants, Bengal tigers, wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and over 400 species of birds. The reserve features extensive grasslands, marshes, and forests shaped by annual flooding, which sustains rich biodiversity throughout the seasons. Established as a national park in 1905 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985, Kaziranga has played a critical role in wildlife conservation in India. The biosphere reserve also includes areas designated for sustainable human use and local communities, making it a model for conservation intertwined with livelihoods. Visitors can explore Kaziranga mainly through jeep safaris or elephant-back rides that offer unparalleled opportunities to spot rhinos and other wildlife particularly at dawn or dusk. The reserve's landscapes are dominated by tall elephant grass and numerous water bodies, giving a unique ecological character. Nearby watchtowers, rivers, and grasslands provide prime locations for photography and bird watching. Kaziranga’s cultural significance and wildlife spectacles make it one of India’s most treasured protected places for nature enthusiasts, researchers, and eco-tourists alike.
