About Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve

Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve is a critical wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, India, renowned for its rich biodiversity and extensive forested landscapes offering opportunities for wildlife observation and nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR) is located in the southern Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu and was established in 1988 to protect the region’s rich forest ecosystems and endangered species, particularly tigers. Covering a large area of dense tropical evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests, and grasslands, KMTR spans parts of Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts. The terrain is rugged, marked by hill ranges, valleys, and perennial streams such as the Tamirabarani River which flows through the reserve, supporting its diverse flora and fauna. The reserve’s ecology is highly significant due to its role as a biodiversity hotspot supporting many endemic and threatened species like Bengal tigers, Indian elephants, gaur, Nilgiri tahr, and rare birds like the Indian pied hornbill.

Visitors are drawn to KMTR primarily for wildlife watching, with the possibility of sighting large mammals and numerous bird species in their natural habitat. The reserve offers guided trekking opportunities, allowing enthusiasts to explore remote forest trails leading to viewpoints and waterfalls like the famous Sairandhri and Kalakad waterfalls. Besides wildlife and trekking, the reserve is important for researchers studying tiger conservation and forest ecology. The protected status of KMTR has contributed to successful tiger population recoveries and ongoing habitat restoration efforts. Overall, the reserve provides a unique experience for ecotourists interested in tropical forest ecosystems, wildlife photography, and experiencing one of the largest and most diverse protected areas in the Western Ghats of India.
