About Jangneung Bog Wetlands

Jangneung Bog Wetlands is a pristine peat bog ecosystem in Gangwon-do, South Korea, treasured for its unique freshwater flora, rare wildlife, and critical role in regional biodiversity conservation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Jangneung Bog Wetlands, located in the mountainous region of Gangwon-do province, South Korea, represent one of the country's few remaining natural peatland ecosystems. This bog formed over thousands of years through the accumulation of organic matter under water-saturated conditions, creating a carbon-rich habitat that supports diverse plant and animal life. The wetlands play a vital role in water purification, flood mitigation, and serve as an important refuge for migratory birds and rare species such as the Korean Fire-bellied Toad and several endemic plants adapted to acidic, nutrient-poor conditions. The landscape features a mosaic of sphagnum moss mats, sedge beds, and dwarf shrubs, interspersed with small pools and streams. Historically, the area remained largely untouched due to its remote and difficult terrain, fostering exceptional ecological integrity. Visitors to Jangneung Bog Wetlands can explore carefully maintained boardwalk trails that provide intimate views without disturbing the fragile ground. Birdwatching is a key attraction, especially during migration seasons when waterfowl and woodland birds utilize the habitat. The bog also offers educational programs emphasizing wetland ecology and conservation efforts. While the site is primarily for observation and scientific research, hiking and nature photography are popular recreational pursuits. The Jangneung Wetlands are protected under South Korea’s Wetland Conservation Act and designated as a Ramsar site recognizing its global importance. These protections have allowed conservationists to monitor the effects of climate change on peat carbon storage and biodiversity. Jangneung Bog Wetlands provide a serene natural retreat for visitors and a critical ecosystem sustaining regional environmental health.
