About Janghang Wetlands

Janghang Wetlands is a critical tidal flat ecosystem on South Korea’s west coast, renowned for its rich biodiversity and role as a refuge for migratory birds. It offers visitors a unique glimpse into dynamic coastal habitats and vibrant wildlife.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in Seocheon County, South Chungcheong Province, Janghang Wetlands is a vast coastal tidal flat system that forms part of the larger Geum Estuary ecosystem. This wetland area lies along the Yellow Sea and is recognized internationally for its ecological importance as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The wetlands feature extensive mudflats, marshes, salt marsh vegetation, and salt pans that together create a mosaic of productive habitats. These intertidal zones provide critical feeding and resting grounds for numerous migratory waterbirds, including endangered species such as the Far Eastern curlew and black-faced spoonbill. The area’s rich biodiversity also supports various fish, crustaceans, and rare plant species adapted to saline and brackish environments.

Historically, local communities have relied on the wetlands for traditional salt production and small-scale fisheries, intertwining cultural practices with conservation efforts. Visitors to Janghang Wetlands can enjoy birdwatching platforms and walking paths that allow immersive views of the rich tidal flats without disturbing sensitive ecosystems. Seasonal bird migrations paint the landscape with incredible sights and sounds, particularly in spring and autumn. The site’s proximity to the Geumgang River estuary adds to its ecological complexity and appeal, attracting nature photographers and researchers alike. While there are no extensive developed camping facilities, day visits focused on nature observation and photography are highly rewarding. The Janghang Wetlands stand as a crucial refuge for coastal biodiversity amid increasing development pressures, making its preservation vital.
