About Isar-Inn-Auwald Nature Reserve

The Isar-Inn-Auwald Nature Reserve protects one of Central Europe’s most valuable and extensive riparian forest landscapes, offering rich biodiversity and serene riverine recreation along the Isar and Inn rivers.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Isar-Inn-Auwald Nature Reserve is a vital riparian forest ecosystem located in the Bavarian region of southeast Germany, near the confluence of the Isar and Inn rivers. Spanning expansive floodplain forests, marshlands, and dynamic riverine habitats, the reserve preserves a rare, near-natural watercourse and floodplain system in Central Europe. Its dense alluvial forests are dominated by species such as alder, willow, and ash, supporting a high diversity of flora and fauna, including several endangered and protected species. The reserve plays an important role as a natural flood control area, filtering water and creating habitat complexity that benefits fish spawning grounds and bird nesting sites.

Visitors to the Isar-Inn-Auwald experience tranquil hikes on well-maintained trails that meander through forests and along riverbanks, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, particularly birdwatching. The area is known for sightings of kingfishers, Eurasian beavers, and diverse amphibian populations. Canoeing and fishing are popular on sections of the Isar River, while photography enthusiasts appreciate the varying light and reflections created by the meandering waterways and dense vegetation. Historically, the reserve represents a remnant of the former vast floodplain landscapes that once covered much of Europe, now highly diminished by river regulation and urban development. Its protection helps promote ecological restoration and environmental education. Proximity to urban centers such as Landshut and the larger Munich metropolitan area makes it an accessible natural haven for day trips and nature excursions. Overall, the Isar-Inn-Auwald provides a peaceful retreat into a rich and dynamic natural environment characterized by its water-centered ecosystems and culturally significant forest landscapes.
