About Iberá Wetlands

The Iberá Wetlands are one of South America’s largest freshwater wetlands, offering extensive opportunities for wildlife viewing, canoeing, and nature exploration in a rich subtropical ecosystem.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Iberá Wetlands, located in northeastern Argentina within Corrientes Province, cover approximately 1.3 million hectares, making them one of the largest freshwater wetlands on the continent. The area is a network of marshes, lagoons, swamps, and small islands formed by ancient river systems. Its unique geography creates a diverse mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial habitats that support a rich variety of wildlife, including over 350 bird species, marsh deer, capybaras, jaguars, giant otters, and caimans. The wetlands play a crucial ecological role for migratory birds and aquatic biodiversity. One of the most important conservation initiatives in the region is the Iberá Provincial Reserve, established to preserve this fragile environment and support ecotourism. Visitors to the wetlands engage in activities such as guided wildlife safaris, kayaking through calm channels, birdwatching on floating hides, and hiking trails that weave through the surrounding forests and grasslands. Notable landmarks include the Laguna Iberá, a key aquatic feature, and the interpretive centers near the village of Colonia Carlos Pellegrini, where visitor education about the wetlands’ ecology and conservation takes place. The area has recently gained recognition for successful species reintroduction programs, such as the return of the giant anteater and pampas deer. The wetlands’ combination of water-based recreation, exceptional biodiversity, and cultural experiences make it a premier destination for travelers seeking immersive nature encounters in South America.
