About Hudson River Greenway

The Hudson River Greenway is a scenic, multi-use path that runs along the west side of Manhattan, providing an accessible urban escape with views of the Hudson River, perfect for walking, biking, and recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Hudson River Greenway is the longest waterfront greenway in Manhattan and the centerpiece of New York City's extensive network of bike paths and pedestrian walkways. Stretching roughly 11 miles from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan to the George Washington Bridge in the north, the Greenway follows the western shoreline of the island along the Hudson River. The path connects several parks, piers, and recreational facilities, making it one of the city’s most popular outdoor destinations for locals and visitors alike. Its route travels through diverse urban landscapes including the Financial District, Tribeca, Chelsea, the Upper West Side, and Riverside Park. The Greenway provides spectacular views of the river, the Palisades on the New Jersey side, and the iconic Manhattan skyline. Ecologically, the greenway corridor supports riparian habitats along the river’s edge with native grasses, migrating birds, and occasional sightings of waterfowl. Historically, the waterfront areas transformed from industrial shipping piers into public parks and paths beginning in the late 20th century, reflecting a major urban renewal effort. Key landmarks along the route include the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, the Little Red Lighthouse, and Rockefeller Park. Outdoor activities on the Greenway span cycling, jogging, rollerblading, fishing, and kayaking at select locations. The Greenway’s flat, paved surface invites users of all ages and skill levels, serving as a crucial component of New York City’s transportation and recreational infrastructure. Its ease of access and scenic qualities attract millions of visitors each year, offering a green respite within the dense cityscape.
