About Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark

Horseshoe Curve is a famous railroad engineering marvel in Pennsylvania that offers a unique blend of historical significance and outdoor viewing opportunities, attracting rail enthusiasts and visitors year-round.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark is located near Altoona, Pennsylvania, and features a sweeping 220-degree horseshoe-shaped bend in the railroad tracks that was completed in 1854 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. This engineering feat was designed to overcome the steep Allegheny Mountains by extending the rail line's length, dramatically reducing the grade for trains. The landmark sits on a hillside overlooking the curve, providing visitors with panoramic views of trains making the famous loop. The area surrounding Horseshoe Curve consists of deciduous forests common to the region, with a diverse mix of oak, maple, and other hardwood species supporting a variety of bird species and small mammals. Though primarily known for its historical and engineering importance, the site offers hiking trails and observation decks that appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and photographers. The curve played a critical role in America's industrial growth by facilitating transportation of coal, steel, and other goods across the Appalachian Mountains. Today, it remains an active railroad with regular freight and occasional passenger trains passing through. Visitors are drawn to watch the powerful trains negotiate the curve and to learn about railroad history at the nearby museum housed in the Visitors Center. Horseshoe Curve's unique combination of natural setting, historic infrastructure, and rail operations makes it a distinctive destination suitable for families, history buffs, and railfans looking for an accessible and engaging outdoor experience.
