Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

High Mountain Park Preserve is located in Passaic County, New Jersey, spanning parts of Wayne, West Milford, and Ringwood. The preserve is characterized by rugged ridges, rocky outcrops, and dense forested slopes rising to elevations of approximately 1,200 feet, with High Mountain itself serving as a prominent viewpoint. This area protects important natural habitats that include mixed hardwood forests, hemlock groves, and wetlands supporting a variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, red fox, migratory birds, and occasional sightings of timber rattlesnakes. The geology includes ancient metamorphic rocks that form dramatic cliffs and ledges popular with rock climbers. Historically, the land was owned by the North Jersey Water Supply Commission and later transferred to Open Space preservation efforts to prevent development and maintain it as a natural refuge near populated areas.
