About Het Zwin Nature Park

Het Zwin Nature Park is a unique coastal wetland reserve straddling the Belgium-Netherlands border, renowned for its rich birdlife, tidal mudflats, and salt marshes offering outstanding opportunities for wildlife viewing and nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Het Zwin Nature Park covers a dynamic coastal ecosystem located at the mouth of the Western Scheldt estuary, primarily in the province of Zeeland, Belgium, extending slightly into the Netherlands. It encompasses salt marshes, tidal mudflats, dunes, creeks, and brackish ponds shaped by tides and storm surges. The park is especially famous as a vital resting and breeding ground for a wide variety of migratory and native birds, making it one of Western Europe's premier birdwatching sites. Visitors can observe species such as oystercatchers, avocets, spoonbills, herons, egrets, and numerous migratory waders and waterfowl. The interplay of land and sea creates highly productive salt marshes rich in plant and marine life, supporting a complex food web and harboring several rare species. Historically, the landscape evolved from a medieval tidal inlet devastated in the 16th-century floods to a protected natural reserve established in the 20th century. Today, the park balances conservation efforts with sustainable outdoor recreation. Key recreation opportunities include guided birdwatching tours, walking trails on raised wooden platforms and dikes, and educational exhibits at the visitor center near Knokke-Heist. Several observation hides and panoramic viewpoints allow visitors to enjoy quiet wildlife watching. Het Zwin's blend of biodiversity, coastal scenery, and cultural history make it an appealing destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and families seeking immersive outdoor experiences in a fragile but stunning maritime environment.
