About Henderson Lake Natural Area

Henderson Lake Natural Area preserves a pristine high-elevation lake and its surrounding old-growth forests in Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, offering peaceful hiking, wildlife observation, and natural solitude.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Henderson Lake Natural Area is a protected region located in the Olympic National Forest on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. It centers on Henderson Lake, a small but ecologically significant alpine lake situated at approximately 3,200 feet elevation. The area is characterized by dense stands of old-growth Douglas-fir, western hemlock, and western red cedar, along with a diverse understory of ferns and mosses that thrive in the cool, moist climate of the region. The natural area is part of a larger network of protected lands that support populations of Roosevelt elk, black bears, and various bird species, including threatened marbled murrelets. Historically, the region was used by indigenous groups and later saw limited logging activity before its designation as a natural area in the late 20th century to preserve its ecological integrity. Recreational opportunities focus primarily on hiking and nature study, with trails winding through old-growth forest and leading to viewpoints overlooking the small alpine lake. The quiet and relatively undisturbed setting makes it a favored spot for solitude seekers and photographers aiming to capture pristine natural landscapes. Access to Henderson Lake Natural Area is via Forest Service roads, though some routes may close seasonally due to snow or maintenance. While the area is less frequented than nearby Olympic National Park, it offers a valuable wilderness experience with fewer visitors, making it ideal for those interested in ecology, botany, and wildlife observation. Its modest elevation and rich moisture support a lush environment unmatched in much of the Pacific Northwest, helping maintain biodiversity and serving as a corridor for wildlife in the region.
