Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is located in Cary, North Carolina, and encompasses approximately 140 acres of unique eco-zones that are home to a rare population of Eastern Hemlock trees more typical of mountainous regions. This lowland preserve offers a fascinating glimpse into a cooler microclimate, a vestige of the last Ice Age, supporting various wildlife and plant species not usually found in the area. The history of the bluffs is rich with educational opportunities, as the Stevens Nature Center provides insights into both the natural and cultural history of the preserve. The bluffs themselves are a series of north-facing bluffs rising 90 feet above the surrounding terrain, offering both an aesthetic and educational experience. Key recreation opportunities include the shaded hiking trails that offer a leisurely experience under the cover of dense tree canopies, allowing visitors to experience the serene environment and opportunity for wildlife viewing.
