Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Gurara Falls Protected Area is located in Niger State, Nigeria, centered around the striking Gurara Waterfalls on the Gurara River. Approximately 30 meters high, the waterfalls cascade through rocky cliffs and lush vegetation, creating a dramatic and scenic landscape. The area covers a section of tropical woodland and riverine forest, supporting diverse flora such as mahogany and iroko trees and fauna including various bird species, reptiles, and small mammals. Historically, Gurara Falls has long been a place of cultural significance to surrounding indigenous communities, hosting periodic festivals and local traditions. The protected status aims to conserve the natural beauty and ecological value of the falls and its surrounding landscape. Visitors to Gurara Falls can enjoy hiking along river trails, picnicking near the water, and swimming in designated pools below the falls.
