About Guácharo National Park

Guácharo National Park protects the dramatic karst landscapes and the famous Cueva del Guácharo, home to thousands of oilbirds, offering unique wildlife viewing and cave exploration opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1975, Guácharo National Park is located in the eastern region of Venezuela, within Monagas state. The park is centered around the Guácharo Cave (Cueva del Guácharo), one of the most important natural landmarks in the country, famous for the oilbird (Steatornis caripensis) colonies that inhabit it. These nocturnal birds navigate in total darkness using echolocation, creating a mysterious and captivating spectacle for visitors. The park encompasses rugged terrain characterized by dramatic karst formations, limestone cliffs, and dense rainforest. Vegetation ranges from humid tropical forest to cloud forest, providing habitat for a diverse array of flora and fauna including various endemic and migratory species. Human history in the park is closely tied to indigenous traditions and early scientific explorations led by Alexander von Humboldt, who first documented the oilbirds here. Visitors to Guácharo enjoy guided cave tours where they can observe the birds leaving the cave at dusk, hiking on forest trails with opportunities for birdwatching and photography, and immersing themselves in the tranquil natural environment. The park’s conservation efforts target the protection of the cave ecosystem and its fragile wildlife populations. Guácharo National Park remains a crucial site for environmental education and ecotourism in Venezuela.
