Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans over 19,800 acres of the Appalachian region in southwestern Virginia, primarily in Bland and Giles counties. This protected area encompasses steep forested slopes, rushing mountain streams, and mixed hardwood-pine ecosystems that provide critical habitat for a variety of wildlife. The WMA was acquired by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to conserve native flora and fauna while offering public recreational opportunities. Visitors can engage in hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife observation throughout the year. The landscape is dominated by second-growth forests of oak, hickory, pine, and tulip poplar, which support abundant populations of white-tailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and various songbirds. Notable water bodies such as Wolf Creek and its tributaries support brook trout, making the area a popular fishing destination. Trail networks provide access to remote sections of the forest, including overlook points with scenic views of the Appalachian Mountains.
