Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Great War Island is situated at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers in Belgrade, Serbia. Covering over 200 hectares, the island is known for its lush ecosystems, which support a diverse array of plant and animal species. Notably, it provides habitat for over 100 bird species, making it a favored location for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts. Historically, the island played a strategic military role, influencing its name, and remnants of its past can still be found in some partially preserved fortifications. Today, visitors can explore its natural beauty through several walking paths, observe the seasonal bird migrations, or relax on Lido Beach, which is a popular summertime destination. Despite its urban setting, the island serves as a tranquil retreat from the bustling city, ideal for hiking, birdwatching, and picnicking. Conservation efforts focus on maintaining its ecological balance and protecting its biodiversity.
