About Great Sand Sea

The Great Sand Sea is an immense area of shifting dunes straddling the border between Egypt and Libya, offering a unique landscape of endless sand waves and a challenging environment for adventurers.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Great Sand Sea is a vast expanse of sand dunes that stretches across the borders of Egypt and Libya. This desert covers approximately 72,000 square miles and is characterized by its dramatic landscapes, including some of the world's tallest sand dunes, with heights reaching up to 300 meters. The region boasts a hot desert climate, with extremely high temperatures during the day and freezing temperatures at night. Despite its harsh environment, the Great Sand Sea has a sparse yet unique ecology, with resilient species of plants and animals adapted to survive with minimal water. Historically, the area held significance as a trade route for ancient caravans. Today, it attracts adventure travelers and desert explorers who are drawn to its remote and untouched beauty. Key sites include the Silica Glass Field, where natural glass was formed by an ancient meteorite impact, and the ancient remnants of tree stumps, reminders of a wetter past.
