About Grand River Wildlife Management Area

Grand River Wildlife Management Area is a diverse habitat located in northeast Ohio, offering abundant opportunities for wildlife observation, hunting, hiking, and fishing along the Grand River corridor.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Grand River Wildlife Management Area spans over 5,000 acres along the lower reaches of the Grand River in Ashtabula County, Ohio. This protected area features a mix of wetlands, bottomland forests, floodplain meadows, and upland woodland, providing important habitat for a variety of wildlife species. The Grand River itself is a designated Ohio State Scenic River and supports a healthy fish population including steelhead trout, making it a prized spot for anglers. Created and managed by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, the WMA serves as a critical refuge for migratory birds, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and other native fauna. The landscape changes seasonally, with spring floods revitalizing wetland areas and autumn offering ideal conditions for wildlife hunting and photographic opportunities. Public access includes several trails that allow hiking and birdwatching, alongside designated hunting zones under regulated seasons. The Grand River Wildlife Management Area also boasts varied terrain with floodplain views, opportunities for watersports like canoeing, and quiet spots for nature observation. Visitors appreciate the blend of riverine ecosystem and upland forest, as well as the peaceful rural setting away from urban development. Nearby towns provide access points and amenities, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the region.
