Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Gramvousa and Balos Marine Protected Area is located off the northwest coast of Crete, Greece, encompassing the islands of Gramvousa and the stunning Balos Lagoon along with surrounding marine habitats. This protected area features striking turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and salt pans, creating a unique coastal ecosystem. The area supports diverse marine life including Posidonia seagrass beds vital for maintaining biodiversity and carbon sequestration, as well as various species of fish, birds, and endangered marine turtles like the Caretta caretta.
