About Goose Lake Wildlife Area

Goose Lake Wildlife Area preserves vital wetland and high desert habitats along the Oregon-California border, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, birding, and nature photography.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Goose Lake Wildlife Area is a key conservation zone located along the southern border of Oregon, adjacent to Goose Lake, a large, shallow intermittent lake that extends into northern California. The area features a mix of wetland, riparian zones, and sagebrush steppe environments that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of bird species and other wildlife. The lake and surrounding marshes serve as an essential stopover and breeding ground for migratory waterfowl, including tundra swans, ducks, geese, and shorebirds, making it a premier destination for birdwatchers. The Wildlife Area is managed by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) and spans approximately 3,438 acres, encompassing both wetlands and upland habitats. Besides rich avian life, visitors may encounter mule deer, coyotes, and various small mammals. The landscape’s expansive views reflect the high desert character of Lake County, with nearby volcanic and volcanic plateau features adding geological interest. Recreational opportunities include birding, wildlife photography, hiking on informal trails, and seasonal waterfowl hunting in regulated areas. Due to its remote location and minimal developed facilities, the Goose Lake Wildlife Area offers a quiet and less crowded nature experience compared to more developed parks. The area’s seasonally variable lake levels and wetlands create dynamic natural conditions that attract diverse species and emphasize the importance of water conservation in this semi-arid region. Goose Lake itself, historically significant for Native American tribes and early settlers, adds a cultural and ecological layer to the experience. Overall, the wildlife area appeals to visitors seeking solitude, bird ecotourism, and learning about high desert wetland ecosystems near the Oregon-California border.
