Golden Gate Highlands National Park, located in the rolling Maloti Mountains of the eastern Free State, South Africa, spans around 116 square miles and is renowned for its striking sandstone cliffs. These cliffs, which dramatically reflect the sun's golden hues at sunset, give the park its name. The park supports a diverse ecosystem with a variety of flora and fauna, including bearded vultures and the endangered Oribi. Established in 1963, this park has a rich cultural history with evidence of early human inhabitants and rock paintings. Visitors can explore numerous trails offering panoramic views, while also engaging in activities such as horseback riding, game viewing, and environmental education.
