Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Garden Route National Park, established in 2009, is a sprawling protected area that stretches across parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape in South Africa. It amalgamates sections of the former Tsitsikamma and Wilderness National Parks, along with other tracts of public and private land. This park is renowned for its dramatic coastlines, lush forests, and fynbos-covered mountains. The park's biodiversity is incredibly rich, featuring indigenous forests, wetlands, and succulents, making it a hotspot for nature enthusiasts and ecologists alike. Mariners will find a refuge in its serene estuaries and rivers, where water activities like canoeing and fishing are popular. Hiking is a top draw here, with trails like the Otter Trail meandering through diverse terrains and offering sightings of unique wildlife such as the Knysna turaco. Not far from this natural bounty, the local culture and history of the Garden Route area add a layer of richness, with evidence of ancient human occupation at the Cango Caves and other historical landmarks. Easy access from major towns makes it a popular destination for both local and international visitors.
