About Fraser River Estuary

The Fraser River Estuary is a vital coastal wetland at the mouth of the Fraser River in British Columbia, renowned for its rich biodiversity and excellent opportunities for birdwatching, nature study, and water-based recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Fraser River Estuary is located where the Fraser River, British Columbia's longest river, empties into the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver. This protected area spans over 12,000 hectares of tidal mudflats, salt marshes, and estuarine habitats that form one of the most important migratory bird sites in Canada and a key stopover along the Pacific Flyway. Its diverse habitats support hundreds of bird species including great blue herons, sandpipers, and endangered species such as the western sandpiper and the peregrine falcon. The estuary also supports significant populations of salmon, which use these waters during their life cycles.

Historically, Indigenous peoples have sustainably relied on the estuary for fishing and harvesting shellfish for thousands of years. Today, it is managed by multiple conservation groups and government agencies focused on habitat preservation and species recovery. Visitors to the Fraser River Estuary can enjoy birdwatching at designated viewing platforms, paddling in calm estuarine waters, and guided nature walks. Nearby parks and conservation areas, such as George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, provide boardwalks and interpretive centers.

The estuary's wetlands play a crucial role in flood mitigation, water filtration, and carbon storage. It is also a critical area for research and environmental education. While access is often limited to protect wildlife, seasonal trails and observation points offer opportunities for quiet contemplation and outdoor enjoyment. The estuary's proximity to urban centers like Vancouver makes it a valuable natural refuge within a heavily developed region.
