Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Fragas do Eume Natural Park is one of the best-preserved Atlantic oak forests in Europe, covering an area of approximately 9,000 hectares along the Eume River in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. The park's geography features steep river valleys, dense woodlands, and rugged cliffs, creating a unique microclimate that supports a wide variety of plant and animal species. Its ecosystems are dominated by ancient oak and chestnut trees, ferns, mosses, and other native flora. The park is a refuge for fauna including the European otter, pine marten, goshawk, and several types of amphibians and butterflies. Historically, the park is home to the Monastery of Caaveiro, a 10th-century Benedictine monastery located on a promontory overlooking the Eume River, providing cultural and architectural significance. Recreational opportunities include hiking along forest trails, birdwatching, mountain biking, and photography. Well-marked trails traverse the park, ranging from easy riverbank walks to more challenging ascents offering panoramic views. The park's rivers and waterfalls add natural highlights for visitors eager to experience tranquil water habitats. Fragas do Eume attracts visitors seeking a combination of natural beauty, ecological value, and historical interest, making it a prominent destination for eco-tourism and outdoor activities in northwest Spain.
