Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Fox Lake Wildlife Area spans over 6,100 acres in Dodge County, Wisconsin, centered around Fox Lake, an important natural resource in the region. The area includes a mosaic of ecosystems, including marshes, wet meadows, upland prairies, and hardwood forests, which provide sanctuary for waterfowl, songbirds, and game species. The wetlands serve as critical breeding and feeding grounds for waterfowl such as ducks and geese, while the uplands host populations of deer, wild turkey, and small mammals. The diverse landscape also supports numerous migratory birds, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers and hunters alike.
Originally managed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the wildlife area was established to preserve wetland and grassland habitats. It supports active habitat management practices like controlled burns, invasive species control, and water level regulation to maintain optimal conditions for native flora and fauna. Fishing opportunities abound in Fox Lake’s waters, offering anglers chances to catch panfish, bass, and northern pike.
Recreational activities include hiking, birding, hunting in season, and photography. The area’s relatively flat terrain provides easy access for all skill levels, with several informal trails and observation points located around the lake and marshes. Though no developed campgrounds exist inside the wildlife area, nearby communities such as Fox Lake and Waupun provide accommodations and amenities. The site appeals to visitors interested in wildlife viewing and outdoor activities while emphasizing conservation and habitat preservation.
