Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1964, the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge is one of the largest city-owned nature centers in the United States. Spanning more than 3,600 acres, the refuge protects a diverse blend of ecosystems including forests, wetlands, prairies, and riparian corridors along Marine Creek and the West Fork of the Trinity River. The landscape features mature hardwood forests with post oak, blackjack oak, and elm trees, while the wetlands support amphibians, waterfowl, and various aquatic species. Historically, the land was used for agriculture and cattle grazing before being designated for conservation and environmental education. Today, visitors can explore nearly 20 miles of multi-use trails, facilitating activities such as hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and horseback riding. Key landmarks include the Willow Pond, a popular spot for birdwatching and amphibian observation, and the Arboretum with native plant displays highlighting Texas's flora. The Refuge's visitor center offers exhibits on local ecology and history, along with guided programs. This area serves as an important refuge for deer, bobcats, numerous bird species, and native fish, making it a valued urban wildlife sanctuary. The Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge invites outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike to experience the natural heritage of North Texas while enjoying peaceful, scenic landscapes minutes from the city.
