Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Fort Hunter Liggett is located in the southern part of Monterey County, California, spanning roughly 165,000 acres of primarily undeveloped land. The terrain includes rolling oak woodlands, chaparral-covered hills, grassy valleys, and intermittent streams, supporting diverse wildlife such as tule elk, deer, wild pigs, and numerous bird species. Originally established in the 1940s as a training facility, it remains an active military installation but also accommodates limited public access for outdoor activities. The reservation lies in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, featuring scenic river canyons and portions of the Nacimiento and San Antonio Rivers. Recreation includes hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, camping, and wildlife viewing. Visitors often come to enjoy the natural quiet and solitude away from urban areas. The site is also known for the historic Lake Nacimiento Dam and the legacy of an early 20th-century guest ranch dating back to before the military acquisition. Access to many areas is managed to ensure security and preserve habitat, and military training exercises continue year-round. The combination of vast open space, varied ecosystems, and controlled public use makes Fort Hunter Liggett a unique destination for those interested in outdoor recreation on federal military lands.
