Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Forêt Montmorency Wildlife Reserve is a protected area located approximately 70 kilometers north of Quebec City, within the Laurentian Mountains region of Quebec, Canada. Spanning roughly 397 square kilometers, the reserve preserves an extensive tract of boreal forest dominated by fir, spruce, and pine, with numerous lakes and rivers foundational to the region’s hydrology. Established primarily to protect wildlife habitat and provide sustainable outdoor recreation, it supports healthy populations of species such as moose, black bear, beaver, and various migratory birds. The reserve also serves important ecological functions, including acting as a research site for forest management and biodiversity conservation.

Visitors to Forêt Montmorency enjoy diverse recreational opportunities including fishing for brook trout and lake trout in its many lakes, hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling during winter months. Canoeing and kayaking are popular on its interconnected waterways. The reserve is also known for traditional hunting during regulated seasons. Its rugged terrain and network of trails attract adventure seekers and nature lovers year-round. Seasonal facilities include rustic cabins and shelters operated by Sépaq (Société des établissements de plein air du Québec), which enhance the visitor experience with access points and basic amenities.

The area features rolling hills and valleys shaped by glacial activity, with impressive vistas accessible from hiking trails. The reserve's proximity to Quebec City makes it a favored destination for weekend excursions and extended backcountry trips. Educational programs and guided activities are periodically offered to promote understanding of the region’s natural history and conservation efforts. Forêt Montmorency remains a critical green space combining wildlife preservation and outdoor leisure within the broader network of Quebec’s protected lands.
