Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in the eastern part of Rize Province in northeastern Turkey, Fırtına Valley Protected Area encompasses a stretch of the Fırtına River and its surrounding steep mountain terrain. The landscape features dense temperate rainforests, steep cliffs, and fast-flowing streams that originate in the Pontic Mountains. This ecologically significant area is home to diverse flora and fauna, including native trout species in the river and endemic plant communities thriving in the humid climate. Historically, the valley has been inhabited by local communities who constructed unique Ottoman-era wooden bridges and houses that remain visible cultural landmarks today. The protected status preserves both its natural and cultural heritage. Visitors are drawn to Fırtına Valley for its excellent hiking trails alongside the river, whitewater rafting opportunities in the rapid currents, and the peaceful rural atmosphere. The valley’s scenic vistas showcase waterfalls, lush greenery, and traditional mountain villages offering authentic regional hospitality. Nature lovers enjoy birdwatching and exploring the forest ecosystems, while adventure seekers test their skills on challenging rafting routes. Infrastructure is modest but sufficient for day hikes and river excursions. The combination of scenic beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural richness makes Fırtına Valley a notable destination for ecotourism in Turkey's Black Sea region.
