Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Faial Nature Park encompasses the majority of Faial Island, one of the central islands in the Azores archipelago of Portugal. Characterized by volcanic origins, the park boasts an impressive geology highlighted by the Capelinhos Volcano, whose 1957-58 eruption dramatically reshaped the island’s southwestern coastline, creating striking lava fields and unique volcanic formations. The park’s geography features rugged cliffs, calderas, dense laurel forests, and fertile pastures, all surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean.
