Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Exminster Marshes is a wetland nature reserve located on the east bank of the River Exe estuary near Exeter in Devon, England. This reserve covers a series of tidal reedbeds, grazing marshes, and creeks, providing essential habitat for a wide variety of bird species, especially during migration and winter months. The marshes are internationally important for their ecological role as part of the Exe Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA). Historically, the marshlands served as grazing areas for livestock and have been shaped over centuries by human activity alongside natural processes. Today, they provide excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, particularly for birdwatchers spotting species such as peregrine falcons, marsh harriers, avocets, and various waders. Besides birding, visitors enjoy gentle walking paths with scenic views of the estuary and distant hills. The reserve is maintained by Devon Wildlife Trust and offers boardwalks, hides, and bird-watching facilities that make the area highly accessible for day visitors and nature enthusiasts. Its close proximity to Exeter makes it a popular spot for locals and tourists seeking tranquil outdoor recreation not far from urban centers.
