About Epupa Conservancy

Epupa Conservancy is a community-managed conservation area in northern Namibia known for its dramatic landscapes, including the Epupa Falls on the Kunene River, and rich cultural heritage alongside abundant wildlife.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Epupa Conservancy lies in the rugged Kunene region of northwestern Namibia, along the border with Angola. It spans a vast expanse of arid savanna and granite outcrops, marked by the seasonal flow of the Kunene River which forms the spectacular Epupa Falls. These waterfalls, characterized by cascades tumbling over red sandstone rocks into deep pools, are the conservancy’s defining natural attraction. The conservancy supports an array of wildlife including desert-adapted elephants, giraffes, oryx, and various carnivores, while the Kunene River is home to hippos and crocodiles. Established and managed by local Himba communities, the conservancy is a prime example of community-led conservation, where cultural traditions and wildlife preservation coexist. Visitors can experience interactions with Himba people, renowned for maintaining traditional pastoral lifestyles. Key recreation opportunities include guided hikes around the falls, cultural village visits, bird watching, fishing, and boat trips on the river. The area’s rough terrain and remote location offer a sense of wilderness and solitude, attracting travelers seeking adventure away from typical tourist circuits. Epupa Conservancy is also important for its grassroots conservation efforts that aim to improve livelihoods through sustainable tourism and natural resource management. Accommodation options range from eco-friendly lodges to campsites, often run by local entrepreneurs. Despite limited infrastructure, the conservancy offers unique scenery, abundant wildlife, and cultural immersion in Namibia’s northwestern frontier.
