This large coastal preserve features upland pine flatwoods, hardwood forests, mangroves, and saltwater shoreline, providing habitat for a variety of native plants and animals. The preserve's geographic position at the confluence of the Manatee River and Tampa Bay offers panoramic views of the water and nearby islands. Archaeological sites within the preserve reveal evidence of indigenous Timucuan presence, including shell mounds dating back more than 1,000 years.
