Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Eagle River Nature Preserve encompasses approximately 1,600 acres of wetlands, forests, and waterways in Vilas County, northern Wisconsin. The preserve protects a complex of freshwater wetlands, pristine hardwood forests, and the headwaters of the Eagle River, known for its clear, cold waters. The preserve plays a critical role in maintaining water quality and habitat for a variety of wildlife, including migratory birds, waterfowl, amphibians, and rare plant species. Historically, the area was used by Native American communities and later by early European settlers for fishing and trapping. Today, the preserve offers important recreational opportunities such as hiking on well-maintained nature trails, kayaking and canoeing on the river and connected lakes, wildlife observation, and environmental education programs. Notable landmarks within the preserve include the scenic Eagle River headwaters and a series of boardwalks that allow visitors to explore the wetland habitats without disturbance. The preserve's network of trails accommodates easy walks as well as more vigorous hikes, making it accessible to visitors of all ages and skill levels. Birdwatchers often visit in spring and fall to observe migrating species. The Eagle River Nature Preserve is managed for both conservation and public enjoyment, providing a peaceful outdoor experience while protecting ecologically significant landscapes in northern Wisconsin.
