Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Durankulak Lake is a coastal lagoon located in the northeastern part of Bulgaria along the Black Sea near the border with Romania. As a designated Ramsar wetland site, it covers an area of freshwater and brackish habitats that support a diverse range of flora and fauna. The lake and surrounding marshes provide critical nesting and feeding grounds for over 250 bird species, including rare and endangered migratory waterfowl such as the Dalmatian pelican, pygmy cormorant, and ferruginous duck. The shallow waters and reed beds create an ideal environment for amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, contributing to the ecological value of the site. Historically, the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological remains in the vicinity indicating ancient human activity. For visitors, Durankulak Lake offers birdwatching platforms and walking paths that allow observation of wildlife in a tranquil setting. Though less developed for tourism than other protected areas, it draws researchers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers who are interested in wetland ecosystems and biodiversity. Its protection under Ramsar emphasizes the importance of maintaining the delicate balance between conservation and sustainable public access. The nearby Black Sea coast also provides opportunities for supplementary recreational activities such as hiking along coastal trails and exploring traditional Bulgarian fishing villages.
