About Denver Mountain Parks System

The Denver Mountain Parks System is a unique collection of mountain parks owned and operated by the City and County of Denver, offering year-round outdoor recreation and scenic beauty just a short drive from the city.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Denver Mountain Parks System is a distinctive network of parks established by Denver in the early 20th century to provide residents and visitors with access to the foothills and mountain landscapes west of the city. Spanning over 14,000 acres across various mountain locations, these parks offer diverse terrain including montane forests, alpine meadows, river valleys, and rugged ridgelines. The system was created following a visionary plan in 1912 aimed at preserving natural mountain environments for recreation, education, and conservation. It includes well-developed parks such as Genesee Park, Lookout Mountain, and Mount Falcon, each featuring scenic overlooks, picnic areas, and trail networks. Ecologically, the parks support abundant wildlife such as mule deer, elk, black bears, and numerous bird species. Recreation opportunities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, camping, and winter sports like sledding and snowshoeing. Notable landmarks within the system encompass the Buffalo Bill Museum on Lookout Mountain, and the historic ruins of John Brisben Walker’s castle on Mount Falcon. Visitors appreciate the relatively close proximity to Denver combined with a range of easy to challenging outdoor experiences. The Denver Mountain Parks also play an important role in regional land conservation, maintaining natural corridors and protecting watersheds. Whether seeking a family picnic spot, a strenuous hike with panoramic views, or a quiet nature walk, the Denver Mountain Parks System offers varied options and enduring scenic appeal.
