About Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary

Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary is a premier birdwatching destination on the Gulf Coast of Alabama, offering serene coastal habitats for migrating and resident bird species along with walking trails and scenic beaches.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on the western tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama, the Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary encompasses approximately 164 acres of diverse coastal habitats, including pine forests, salt marshes, and pristine beaches. This sanctuary is part of the Mississippi Flyway, a major migratory route for millions of birds each year, making it a hotspot for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Established and maintained by the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuaries, Inc., the area provides critical stopover habitat for shorebirds, songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl. Its unique geography situates it between Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, offering rich feeding grounds and calm resting spots for migratory birds. The sanctuary features several nature trails, boardwalks, and observation platforms that allow visitors to explore and observe wildlife without disturbing the fragile ecosystems. Key landmarks include the Audubon Bird Sanctuary Pavilion, which offers interpretive information, and the Battery Dubose historic fortification ruins nearby. Visitors enjoy walking, birdwatching, photography, and educational programs that highlight the importance of coastal conservation. The sanctuary also participates in annual bird counts, contributing valuable data to ornithological research. Its appeal lies in the combination of accessible public nature trails and the chance to see rare and migratory birds in a peaceful coastal environment.
