About Daniel Boone Wildlife Management Area

Daniel Boone Wildlife Management Area offers over 44,000 acres of protected forested landscape in eastern Kentucky, providing exceptional opportunities for hunting, hiking, wildlife observation, and outdoor recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the rugged terrain of eastern Kentucky's Appalachian region, the Daniel Boone Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers approximately 44,000 acres of mixed hardwood forests, rolling hills, and steep ridges. The area is managed by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources to conserve diverse wildlife populations, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, black bears, and numerous songbirds. Named after the famous American pioneer Daniel Boone, who explored the region in the late 18th century, the WMA preserves a mix of natural habitats, including mature oak-hickory forests, rhododendron thickets, and riparian zones along its streams. The landscape includes portions of the scenic Kentucky River and offers a variety of terrain types from flat bottoms to steep cliffs. Visitors to the Daniel Boone WMA can enjoy hunting in season, hiking on marked and unmarked trails, wildlife viewing, and photography. The area is well-regarded among hunters for its large game populations and for anglers who fish in the area's creeks and rivers. There are also opportunities to explore remote, backcountry sections that appeal to those seeking solitude and rugged outdoor experiences. Access is primarily by road and forest service trails, with limited developed visitor facilities helping maintain its wilderness feel. The Daniel Boone WMA serves as a prime location for experiencing eastern Kentucky's natural heritage, offering year-round outdoor activities within a protected natural setting.
