About Crawley Creek Wildlife Management Area

Crawley Creek Wildlife Management Area is a diverse natural habitat offering excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife observation in a forested landscape of northern West Virginia.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in northern West Virginia near the town of Kingwood in Preston County, Crawley Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans a lush landscape of mixed hardwood forests and riparian corridors along Crawley Creek and its tributaries. The area supports a range of native wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, black bear, and numerous small game species, making it a favorite spot for hunters during designated seasons. The creek itself provides habitat for various fish such as smallmouth bass and trout, attracting anglers who seek serene freshwater fishing experiences. The WMA features a network of dirt service roads and walking trails that allow visitors to explore the forested hills and valleys, enjoy birdwatching, and experience seasonal changes in foliage. Established to conserve local wildlife populations and maintain habitat quality, the area also serves as a quiet retreat for outdoor enthusiasts interested in camping, photography, and nature study. Although it lacks developed campgrounds, dispersed primitive camping is permitted with typical regulations. The surrounding region's Appalachian terrain includes rolling hills and small ridges, making hiking and mountain biking possible on secondary roads and minimal trails. Wildlife management efforts focus on habitat improvement and public access, providing manageable terrain and natural habitats favorable to various game species. Visitors appreciate the peaceful environment and abundant wildlife sightings, as well as the area's quiet proximity to Kingwood and Morgantown. Crawley Creek WMA is protected and managed by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, serving as a recreational resource and conservation site within the state's extensive WMA system.
